Syed Mohammad Ahmed has spent decades writing some of Pakistani television's sharpest dialogue, and then surprising audiences by appearing in front of the camera to deliver it himself. Writer, lyricist, actor and director, he is one of the industry's great quiet polymaths.

Quick facts

  • Born: 1957
  • Profession: Screenwriter, lyricist, actor, director
  • Known for: Suno Chanda, Kuch Ankahi, and a long list of beloved series and telefilms

The writer's shelf

Frequently credited as Mohammad Ahmed, he is behind series including Mystery Theater, Badtameez, Tum Se Kehna Tha, Shaista Shaista, Azar Ki Ayegi Baraat, Annie Ki Ayegi Baraat, Tanhaiyan Naye Silsilay, Dareecha and Goya, along with telefilms such as Khamoshi and Ghoongat and the film Ramchand Pakistani. His scripts are known for their ear for how people actually talk, particularly the comedy in ordinary households.

The actor's turn

In Suno Chanda his appearance as Shah Jahan, better known to viewers as Agha Jan, drew wide praise and turned him into a recognisable face late in his career. The role put his own dialogue, or dialogue like it, in his voice, and audiences loved the symmetry.

Kuch Ankahi and after

His recent writing, including Kuch Ankahi (2023), showed a writer still willing to experiment with form and family dynamics, while his on-screen appearances have continued to grow.

He is proof that in this industry, words travel furthest, and the people who write them can become stars too.
