Mawra Hocane built her career the modern way: television first, then a leap across the border, then a steady rise through the streaming era. Along the way she became one of the most recognisable actresses of her generation.

Quick facts

  • Born: 28 September 1992
  • Profession: Actress
  • Known for: Sanam Teri Kasam, Aangan, Ek Tamanna Lahasil Si
  • Film firsts: Bollywood debut in Sanam Teri Kasam (2016); Pakistani film debut in Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 (2018)

The early years

Born Mawra Hussain, she made her acting debut on television in 2011 and quickly earned praise for portrayals including Nadia in Ek Tamanna Lahasil Si (2012). Her screen presence, warm and watchable, made her a natural lead for dramas aimed at a young audience.

Crossing over

In 2016 she made her Bollywood debut in the romantic tragedy Sanam Teri Kasam, a film that became a cult favourite in India years after release. Two years later she made her Pakistani film debut in the hit comedy Jawani Phir Nahi Ani 2 (2018), one of the biggest films of that year.

The streaming age

With Aangan and a string of dramas and streaming projects, Hocane has kept her range broad and her output steady, building a following that spans generations and borders.

She has grown up on screen in front of two countries, and both are still watching.
