If you have watched a great Pakistani drama in the last fifteen years, there is a good chance Umera Ahmed wrote it. As a novelist and screenwriter she has supplied the industry with some of its most beloved stories, and her name on a script is still a reason to watch.

Quick facts

  • Profession: Writer, novelist, screenwriter
  • Known for: Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Shehr-e-Zaat, Alif, Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay, and the novel Pir-e-Kamil

The novelist first

Ahmed came to fame as a fiction writer, and novels such as Pir-e-Kamil made her one of the most widely read authors in Urdu. Her fiction deals in faith, class, psychology and the lives of women with a directness that readers found addictive and critics found serious.

The screen adaptations

Television came calling, and the adaptations of her work became a golden run: Shehr-e-Zaat (2012), Zindagi Gulzar Hai (2012), Alif (2019) and Hum Kahan Ke Sachay Thay (2021) are among the most discussed dramas of their respective eras. Her other adaptations include Durr-e-Shehwar, Daam, Man-o-Salwa, Qaid-e-Tanhai, Digest Writer, Maat, Kankar, Meri Zaat Zarra-e-Benishan and Doraha.

Why her work endures

Ahmed writes characters whose inner lives are as consequential as their circumstances, and she takes belief seriously in a way most television does not. That combination has given Pakistani drama some of its most quoted lines and memorable endings.

She is one of the creators who made modern Urdu television what it is, and her shelf of stories keeps growing.

Where to follow

Her novels and the dramas adapted from them are widely available across Pakistani streaming platforms.
