Hamza Ali Abbasi does not work like most leading men. He takes long pauses between projects, chooses roles with an almost philosophical seriousness, and has twice walked away from the spotlight only to return with one of the biggest films in the country's history on his shoulders.

Quick facts

  • Born: 23 June 1986
  • Profession: Actor, director
  • Known for: Pyarey Afzal, Mann Mayal, Alif, The Legend of Maula Jatt

The 2013 breakthrough

Abbasi's career took off with the drama Pyarey Afzal (2013), where his performance as Afzal made him a household name. On film the same year he appeared in Main Hoon Shahid Afridi and Waar, winning both Best Star Debut Male and Best Supporting Actor at the first ARY Film Awards.

Peak TV years

He followed with Mann Mayal (2016), where his portrayal of Salahuddin became one of the most quoted characters of its season, and later with Alif (2019), a drama about faith and art that matched his introspective instincts. Between projects he is known for speaking thoughtfully about belief, work, and the responsibilities of fame, a stance that has made him one of the most discussed actors of his generation.

Maula Jatt

In 2022 he played Noori Natt, the antagonist in The Legend of Maula Jatt, the highest-grossing Pakistani film of all time. His thundering performance opposite Fawad Khan gave the film its counterweight and introduced him to a new global audience.

With one of the most selective filmographies in the industry and a reputation for meaning every scene, his next move is always worth waiting for.
