Sanam Saeed has a gift for playing women who think for themselves, and over a 15-year career she has turned that gift into one of the most distinctive filmographies in Pakistan.

Quick facts

  • Born: 1985
  • Profession: Actress, singer, former model
  • Known for: Zindagi Gulzar Hai, Diyar-e-Dil, Cake
  • Awards: Lux Style Awards for Best Television Actress

From Daam to Kashaf

Saeed made her television debut in Daam (2010) after a modelling career, but it was Kashaf Murtaza in Zindagi Gulzar Hai (2012) that made her a national star. Her performance opposite Fawad Khan won her widespread acclaim and Lux Style Award honours, and the character remains one of the most self-possessed heroines in Pakistani drama.

Diyar-e-Dil and beyond

The 2015 family epic Diyar-e-Dil confirmed her range in an ensemble of heavyweights, and she has continued to favour independent-spirited roles ever since, from period work to dramas about women negotiating the modern world.

Cake and the big screen

On film, her leading role in Cake (2018) brought her some of the best reviews of her career and introduced her work to a new, younger audience. The film's portrait of a family in quiet crisis suited exactly the register she does best: powerful, unhurried, precise.

She remains choosy about scripts, which is why every one of them is worth waiting for.
